Two new players, two different applications
AlphaTheta expands its range with the XDJ-AN and CDJ-1500X. Both models work with USB, cloud storage, and streaming services. Yet, they are not intended for the same DJ.
The XDJ-AN is a complete two-channel DJ system with two decks and a built-in mixer. This means you can start DJing immediately without a laptop or an extra mixer. The CDJ-1500X is a single media player. For a typical two-deck setup, you would need two players and a separate DJ mixer.
That distinction may seem obvious, but it determines almost everything: the investment, required space, and expansion possibilities. At launch, the XDJ-AN costs €1,149. The CDJ-1500X costs €1,699 per player. The XDJ-AN is primarily aimed at home use and compact mobile setups. The CDJ-1500X is a better fit for a modular booth.

AlphaTheta XDJ-AN: Standalone DJing in a compact format
The AlphaTheta XDJ-AN is a standalone two-channel DJ system. Music can be played directly from a USB-C storage device. Cloud libraries, streaming services, a computer, and certain mobile DJ apps are also supported.
The control panel follows the familiar layout of standalone CDJ players and DJM mixers. This means the headphone control is located near the mixer, and each deck has separate transport, tempo, and loop controls. Those who later DJ in a club will recognize the basic workflow faster than with many compact software controllers.
Each jog wheel has a diameter of 132 millimeters. Above them are eight Hot Cue buttons per deck. For effects, you get six Sound Color FX and three Beat FX: Reverb, Echo, and Flanger. That's enough for common transitions but clearly less extensive than the effect section of the larger XDJ-AZ.
Searching for music without constantly reaching for a laptop
The 7-inch touchscreen displays tracklists, artwork, waveforms, BPM, key, cues, and loops. You can also create, rename, and reorder cloud-based playlists on the device. Changes to playlists and Hot Cues can be updated between devices via Cloud Library Sync.
StreamingDirectPlay provides access to Apple Music, Beatport Streaming, and TIDAL. This requires a suitable subscription and an internet connection. With rekordbox CloudDirectPlay, you can open a library from Dropbox or Google Drive. This function also requires a suitable rekordbox subscription.
Software use also remains possible. The XDJ-AN works with rekordbox for Mac and Windows via Hardware Unlock. Serato DJ Lite can be used without a paid license. Separate subscriptions apply to Serato DJ Pro, djay Pro, and certain cloud functions.
Via USB-C, you can use rekordbox for iOS or djay for iOS. The DJM-REC app supports recording and livestreaming. Check the licenses beforehand, as standalone does not mean every online service is included for free.
For prepared USB media, the XDJ-AN uses the OneLibrary format. Device Library is not supported. Furthermore, there is no USB-A port for storage. Users of older sticks must therefore check both the connection and the library format.
Wireless listening requires SonicLink
A notable feature is the built-in SonicLink transmitter. This allows you to use compatible headphones, such as the AlphaTheta HDJ-F10, wirelessly. AlphaTheta states a latency from 9 milliseconds. This is much more suitable for cueing than a regular Bluetooth connection.
Bluetooth is present for audio input and output. However, for accurate pre-listening, use SonicLink or the 3.5mm headphone jack. The system also has a balanced XLR master output, an RCA master output, and one 6.3mm microphone input.
Pay attention to the connections if you're DJing on location. There is no separate booth output for a monitor speaker. An XLR microphone input is also missing. For home use, this is usually not an issue, but for mobile shows, it can affect your cabling plan.
With a width of 638 millimeters and a weight of 5.2 kilograms, the XDJ-AN remains highly portable. The external power supply and USB-C connections do require protection on the go. A suitable bag is therefore not an unnecessary purchase.
AlphaTheta CDJ-1500X: a compact player for a modular booth
With the AlphaTheta CDJ-1500X, you choose a different path. This is a standalone DJ media player with a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen. AlphaTheta uses the same screen size as the CDJ-3000X, but places it in a much smaller casing.
With dimensions of 252.1 by 374.7 by 116.5 millimeters, the player takes up little space. Its weight is 3.6 kilograms. This allows it to fit next to a mixer and turntables in booths where a full club setup would be too large.
The screen displays a maximum of fifteen tracks simultaneously. Preview waveforms speed up searching, while the main view can also show vocal positions, phrase information, and BPM changes. With Playlist Edit, you can adjust the order within a playlist directly on the player.
Many functions are on the screen
Eight physical Hot Cue buttons provide direct access to stored cue points. A Beat Loop rotary knob, Beat Sync, and Beat Jump are also present. The mid-sized jog wheel has a rotation indicator and an anti-slip surface.
Compared to the CDJ-3000X, more functions are controlled via the touchscreen. The CDJ-1500X also only has an analog RCA audio output. A coaxial digital output is missing. The jog wheel is also smaller than that of the flagship.
At the front, there are two USB ports in an illuminated recess. A USB-A stick or USB-C storage device protrudes less vulnerably. You can choose the lighting from twelve colors, for example, to visually distinguish players or DJs.
Cloud, streaming, and quick login
In addition to USB, the CDJ-1500X supports rekordbox CloudDirectPlay via Dropbox and Google Drive. StreamingDirectPlay works with Apple Music, Beatport Streaming, and TIDAL. Via built-in Wi-Fi or a wired network connection, you can connect to these services.
Login can be done with a QR code or via NFC with a phone running rekordbox. The player does not automatically remember every online service; valid accounts and subscriptions are still required. Those who exclusively use a prepared USB stick do not need to use the online functions.
PRO DJ LINK is available via the LAN port. This allows up to four players to work together via a suitable mixer or network switch. This is important for fixed installations and extended setups. A standalone player is also easier to replace or maintain than a complete all-in-one system.
Supported audio files are MP3, AAC, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, and FLAC. For USB libraries, you must account for OneLibrary. Older USB devices with only Device Library must first be converted with a recent rekordbox version.
CoBeat brings requests to the screen
CoBeat debuts on the CDJ-1500X. Visitors scan a QR code and can then send song requests or messages. The DJ sees this information on the player's screen.
For an open-format DJ, bar, or wedding, this can be useful. Requests no longer get lost among loose notes and shouts next to the booth. At the same time, it remains an optional online service. Those who play tightly programmed sets in a club do not need to use CoBeat.
The concept is interesting, but practice will show how well it works during busy performances. The DJ still decides what to play. Therefore, see CoBeat as a communication tool, not an automatic playlist.
XDJ-AN or CDJ-1500X: which suits your setup?
Choose the XDJ-AN if you want one compact purchase that allows you to start DJing immediately. The system is well-suited for practicing at home, live streams, and mobile setups without an elaborate booth. Two channels are sufficient if you mainly mix with two decks.
Go for the CDJ-1500X if you deliberately want to combine separate components. You choose the mixer yourself, can add turntables, and determine the layout. This costs considerably more, especially if you need two players.
There is also a difference in operation. The XDJ-AN gives you two decks, mixer functions, and effects within one workspace. The CDJ-1500X offers a larger screen per deck, PRO DJ LINK, and more freedom around the mixer. Neither choice is automatically better.
Those considering the XDJ-AN should particularly check the number of channels, the limited Beat FX, and the lack of a booth output. For the CDJ-1500X, the price per player, the separate mixer, and the analog RCA output are important considerations.
Two modern workflows, without a mandatory laptop
With these introductions, AlphaTheta brings streaming, cloud management, and modern USB-C connections to two different price ranges. The XDJ-AN makes standalone DJing accessible in one compact set. The CDJ-1500X incorporates similar online capabilities into a standalone player for modular setups.
For many home DJs, the XDJ-AN is the most complete choice per euro. The CDJ-1500X deserves attention primarily from venues and DJs who need separate players. Therefore, first determine what your booth should look like. After that, the difference between these two models will quickly become clear.
