What is a MIDI controller?
A MIDI controller is a device that sends signals to music software or another device, such as a synthesizer or sound module. You use it, for example, to control a tone, rhythm, or effect. A MIDI controller itself does not produce sound. Think of it as a kind of remote control for your music.
If you connect a MIDI controller to your computer, you can directly influence what you hear with keys, buttons, and sliders. For example, you can play a melody, adjust the volume, or start a rhythm pattern. The big advantage? You have complete control without constantly clicking with your mouse.
Types of MIDI controllers
DJ Supply has various types of MIDI controllers in its range from brands such as ESI and Arturia. Each controller has its own function and appearance. Below are some popular models that we recommend:
- ESI Audio Xjam: This controller has pressure-sensitive pads that allow you to play rhythms or trigger samples. It is compact and easy to carry. Ideal for beatmakers or musicians who want to make music on the go.
- Arturia BeatStep: A combination of drum pads and a pattern programmer. This allows you to easily create rhythms and patterns. Suitable for both live performances and studio recordings. It works well with various audio devices and programs.
- Arturia KeyStep: This controller has keys to play melodies. In addition, it has functions that allow you to automatically create patterns or repeating motifs. Useful for those who work with synthesizers or other sound sources.
Which MIDI controller should you buy?
Choosing the right MIDI controller depends on your musical style and goal. If you work a lot with rhythms, a pad controller like the Xjam or BeatStep is ideal. If you prefer to play chords or melodies, a keyboard controller like the KeyStep is a logical choice. It is also good to consider the size. If you want a model that fits easily in your backpack, choose a compact design. If you mainly work in your studio, it can be a bit larger.
Furthermore, it is good to check how the controller interacts with your music program. Some models are specially designed to work seamlessly with a specific program, allowing you to get started even faster. This prevents frustration and allows you to get the most out of your setup.
